THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING ON SELF-ESTEEM OF VISUALLY IMPAIRED MALE STUDENTS

Pages

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of SOCIAL SKILLS training on self-esteem of visually impaired male students. The statistical population consisted of all VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENTS of Shahid Mohebi Middle School as experimental group and students of Doctor Khazayeli as control group. From the population, 19 students from each group were chosen by purposive sampling. The Matson Evaluation of SOCIAL SKILLS with Youngsters (Matson, et al, 1983) and Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1967) were utilized to measure SOCIAL SKILLS and self esteem respectively. We used a quasi-experimental research design. Instruction was conducted for the experimental group in eight sessions (90- minutes each) in a period of one month, twice a week. To evaluate participants, performance after a period of one month from the end of the instruction, both groups were reassessed. The hypotheses were tested using analyses of covariance. The results indicated that SOCIAL SKILLS training were significantly effective in enhancing self-esteem. The possible explanation for the increasing students' self-esteem might be due to participation of the experimental group in the SOCIAL SKILLS training program.
