THE ROLE OF CONTINUOUS EVALUATION IN DEEPENING SECOND GRADERS' LEARNING

Abstract

 Survival on the global stage requires continuous meaningful learning, and an evaluation system for making sure that such learning has occurred. It is for the evaluation system to identify the shortcomings at different levels of schooling, especially at the elementary level, in order to pave the way for better teaching and learning. Using the new approaches to evaluation has become inescapable, given the critical consideration of the evaluation system. It has been close to five years since an experimental program of DESCRIPTIVE EVALUATION has been carried out in some schools and districts in Tehran. To evaluate the usefulness of this program, a sample of 142 male and female second graders from such schools was compared with a similar sample from schools not included in the experiment in terms of the depth of their learning. Not only the two groups' creativity, knowledge, and understanding were tested, but their classroom interactions were also observed. The results show the effectiveness of the experimental evaluation program in which continuous and DESCRIPTIVE EVALUATIONs are conducted.
